A simple guide to health.

A simple guide to health.

My experience:

“The mind is just like a muscle – the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets and the more it can expand.” – Idowu Koyenikan.

4 key pillars – all work in a circle together:

  1. Movement of the body
  2. Diet
  3. Sleep

1) Mind

“Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.” Thich Nhat Hanh

The key – meditation

  • Helps unlock your mind from the distractions of the everyday
  • Best way to do – Waking Up app – available on the App Store
  • End goal – having no head – thoughts just disappear into the abyss of time – there is no such thing as a true thought – it is simply a thought that disappears

Other tips for the mind

  • Read fiction books
  • Homeopathy – helps peel the emotional layers of the mind – find a certified homeopath.
  • Walk in nature alone with no phone, no music etc

2) Movement of the body:

“Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured” B.K.S. Iyengar

The key – Iyengar yoga

  • Regular Iyengar yoga practice helps cure a stiff mind and a stiff body
  • Easy way to practice – yogaglo.com – practice all of Marla Apt’s classes – amazing teacher
  • Alternatively if you have a studio nearby – sign up there
  • Different to other yoga – strict alignment – helps to bring body in harmony – which in turn helps the mind

Other tips for the body

  • Bath every night at the same time – use ‘Epsom salts’ – proven to relax the muscles
  • Swimming if have access to freshwater, the sea (the best) – not worth it in chlorine
  • Massages – google crystal healing massages – see if you can find anyone nearby

3) Diet

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Hippocrates

The key – unprocessed foods

  • Eat simple – steamed veg, grains, organic protein – that’s all you need
  • Try stay away from anything with lots of ingredients inside + chemicals + additives
  • Good breakfast – porridge or eggs
  • Feel what you want to eat – as long as it’s not processed!

Other tips for diet

  • Ayurvedic food – find out your Dosha here to see which foods suit you – easy, free quiz: https://www.umaoils.com/pages/dosha-quiz
  • Use local farm shops to source ingredients if possible
  • If not try to buy organic
  • Drink lots of room temp or hot water – very cold water discomfort the digestive system

4) Sleep

“Each night, when I go to sleep, I die. And the next morning, when I wake up, I am reborn.” Gandhi

The key – routine

  • Go to bed early and wake up early at the same time everyday
  • Set a time 1 hour before bed with no tech devices – instead read a book, speak to someone, have a bath, clean your room
  • Even if one night you go to bed late, wake up at normal time to an alarm and nap in the day
  • Sleep allows you to be ‘reborn’ as Gandhi states – realise the importance

Other tips for sleep

  • Sleep in a very dark room – you can purchase black our blinds on amazon
  • Sleep with the windows open
