Folic Acid

Folic acid is the synthetic form of vitamin B9, also known as folate, and is important for the body’s cell production. It helps form red blood cells and supports healthy cell growth and function, which is vital for overall health. Folic acid is especially important during early pregnancy because it helps reduce the risk of brain and spine birth defects in the baby. Since the body can't make folate on its own, it must be obtained through your diet or by taking folic acid supplements.

A lack of folic acid can show up with several noticeable signs. Common symptoms include feeling tired, weak and anemic. People with folic acid deficiency may also have headaches, shortness of breath and pale skin due to not having enough red blood cells. Other signs can include a decreased appetite, irritability and diarrhea.

Folic acid may help reduce belly fat, as some studies suggest it can lower abdominal fat. It works by reducing lipogenesis, the process of fat production in the liver. Folic acid may also limit the growth of fat cells. It has been linked to changes in the gut microbiota, possibly influencing fat reduction by affecting the bacteria in the gut.

The best time to take folic acid supplements is usually in the morning. Since digestion slows down at night, taking it in the morning helps with better absorption. Note that folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin, so it needs to be taken daily because the body can't store it.
