We’ve seen the Instagram posts of self care night being enhanced with big fluffy robes, hair in towel turbans and masks that look like they should be saved for 31st October. So when I got to try the HigherDOSE Red Light mask, I was super excited to join the trend and it’s safe to say, I’m HOOKED and here’s why.

What does a Red Light Mask do?

HigherDOSE claim that it only takes is 20 minutes, 3x a week to reveal bright, glowing and radiant skin and targets redness, pigmentation, fine lines & scarring. These results are normally only achievable in specialist facials so to be able to repeat this therapeutic benefit, multiple times a week, in the comfort of my own home was something I was desperate to try and use over and over again.

The power of Red Light Therapy is often described as the ‘go-to’ for boosting collagen and reducing inflammation. A skincare favourite to firm skin, lessen the appearance of fine lines and support with healing damaged skin. After suffering with acne for years, my skin barrier was pretty damaged with lot’s of redness, hyperpigmentation and scarring so I was incredibly excited to give it a try!

How does a Red Light mask work?

I tried the product for 8 weeks whilst I was also studying the first part of my holistic aesthetician course, so wanted to get into the nitty gritty of the science and give the mask a chance to work.

After charging the power bolt for an hour, The HigherDOSE Red Light Mask uses Near Infared Light Bulbs which restore cellular renewal of the skin whilst stimulating collagen production. The gentle heat that is omitted from the mask, encourages healthy blood flow to the skin which ensures that nutrients & oxygen is properly delivered to the dermal layers of the skin which is essential to ensure that nutrients that we ingest through food are actually delivered to the right places.

Frequent users of Red Light Therapy also claim that the practice acts as a natural mood booster by relaxing the mind and promoting muscle relaxation. The science states that Red Light Therapy DOES have a positive effect on our mood but even implementing this small act of self-care into my weekly routine boosted my mood & took pamper night to the next level.

In terms of how frequently to use the mask, there’s a choice of a 10 or 20 minute setting which automatically shuts off after the allotted time. I was really pleased to see that the HigherDOSE mask has THREE head straps, rather than two which I have used and tried before, meaning that it truly stays in place if you wanted to walk around whilst wearing it AND the battery life lasts for around 3-5 uses of the mask per week, so I only needed to charge the mask once a week even with my frequent usage.

The Results

As I mentioned, I had previously struggled with acne and I scar pretty easily from the tiniest of pimple too! Alongside optimising my nutrition to support the repair of my incredibly damaged skin microbiome, I used the mask for 3 days per week for 10-20 minutes, which was of course made easy with the wearability of it.

As part of my morning routine – this tended to be on weekend mornings, I’d splash my face with cold water & pop the mask on as I got back into bed with my hot cup of Cacao reading a book or whilst watching a Saturday Morning Kitchen Show on the sofa. After 20 minutes of red light, my skin felt pretty glowy which was an instant mood booster & I’d head to a workout class or jump in the shower to get on with my day! In the evening – I really love taking a night to myself to have a long bath with Magnesium Epsom Salts, so this is where I would tend to find some time for the mask. Never IN the bath obviously because I didn’t want to drop the power pack in the water, but after cleansing my skin with my favourite Esse Cleanser, I’d pop the mask on and lie on my Acupressure Mat to just have time to myself. This also would often involve a Sensate Session too just if I wanted to really make the most out on the wellness tech!

Don’t get me wrong, the postman had a shock once or twice & I think my family thought I’d gone bonkers when I bought the mask home with me to use but nevertheless I noticed it was like an instant boost for my skin and a skincare staple I will 100% be continuing to use as part of my routine!

The photo shows just how much of an impact combining inner health and outer techniques has made to supporting my skin. I think it’s important to stress that not one product will fully cure or prevent a skin concern, but this certainly has helped tremendously with the treatment and management of my skin concerns.

Since using the mask, people have complimented me on my skin too which has been really uplifting, especially as someone who used to hide behind a ‘mask of make-up’, this mask has bought that confidence in my skin back.
