“Parasite cleansing is a natural detoxification process aimed at eliminating parasites— organisms that live in or on a host, deriving nutrients at the host’s expense. These can include single-cell parasites like protozoa, worms (helminths, cestodes, trematodes, liver flukes etc.), and microscopic pathogens like Candida,” explains Simoné Laubscher, PhD, a naturopath, nutritionist, and formulator of WelleCo.
While parasites are often associated with tropical diseases or undercooked food, the truth is that many people may carry them without even realising it. And, when left unchecked, they can wreak havoc with our bodies. “Parasites can disrupt digestion, immunity, energy levels, and even mood due to their impact on the gut-brain axis,” Laubscher notes. That’s where cleansing comes in. “It's not about a war on parasites per se, but rather a healthy microbiome diversity and 'good' to 'bad' bacteria balance. When you restore a healthy balance in your gut microbiome, significant improvements in health occur,” says Laubscher, who has helped clients through these protocols for decades.
Aligning your cleanse with the full moon isn’t just about spiritual symbolism. There's actually emerging biological logic behind it. Serotonin actually rises as melatonin falls, which can happen when exposed to a bright light, like the full moon, per the Cleveland Clinic.
“Even if you’re indoors, the natural light of the full moon affects your pineal gland, the part of your brain that regulates melatonin (your sleep and repair hormone). As a result, over the full moon, melatonin levels drop and often lead to a relative increase in serotonin, which is predominantly produced in the gut (about 90%),” says Laubscher.
This biochemical shift doesn’t just affect our mood… it may also influence parasite behaviour. “Serotonin levels are then in comparison higher, creating the perfect environment for parasites to reproduce. Parasites, especially those in the gut and bloodstream, are sensitive to your biochemistry, and higher serotonin levels stimulate intestinal movement and activity, which stimulates parasite activity and mobility,” she explains.
A 2021 study found that when certain parasites were exposed to higher serotonin levels, they experienced growth and were better able to survive. So, when you take into account the fact that most parasites are found in the gastrointestinal tract, and this is where the highest production of serotonin occurs, it makes sense that this link exists.
“On top of this, lower melatonin means less immune surveillance and weakened repair mechanisms, giving parasites a better opportunity to feed, move and reproduce,” says Laubscher. Digestive discomfort is one of the most common clues. “Bloating, constipation, excessive gas or a white coating on the tongue are signs I often see in clients dealing with parasitic overgrowth. These symptoms are frequently misdiagnosed as IBS,” says Laubscher. Travel to tropical regions, eating raw or undercooked meat or fish (especially sushi), and experiencing digestive issues afterwards can also be a telltale trigger.
“Your gut and brain are deeply connected,” Laubscher adds. “When parasites interfere with that ecosystem, the effects can show up in ways that seem completely unrelated—from skin flare-ups to emotional instability.” She adds that unexplained fatigue, brain fog, cravings for sugar or carbs (including wine), and trouble sleeping (particularly waking around 3 am) are also signs that something deeper may be going on in the gut.
The nervous system often gets caught in the crossfire, too. You might notice symptoms like: teeth grinding at night (bruxism), irritability, anxiety, or mood swings and even skin issues like eczema, acne, rashes or hives. “The best way to do a thorough cleanse is to choose 3–4 weeks and move through a full moon cycle to detox,” says Laubscher. “To have a complete parasite cleanse, you need to kill off all three generations of adults, infants & eggs - sounds a bit grim, I know, but it’s very powerful.”

Supporting your body with the right nutrition during a cleanse is also crucial. “It’s best to remove all the foods temporarily that can feed parasites, including sugar, gluten, cow dairy and alcohol,” says Laubscher. “By adjusting your diet, adding in herbs and botanicals to fast-track your cleanse and minimise die-off reactions and making lifestyle tweaks you will have a powerful result.”
Look to eat plenty of cooked vegetables, garlic, pumpkin seeds, papaya and other anti-inflammatory foods, alongside herbal teas such as peppermint, ginger and fennel. Staying well hydrated with filtered water will also help to support toxin elimination.
“Low stomach acids are also a reason for excessive parasites and gut issues, which is why chewing each mouthful 20 times and not eating raw food after 4pm can also be a great help,” she advises. Also, be mindful of food hygiene. “Parasites come from eating raw fish and other meats, particularly pork. If you like these forms of animal protein, take digestive enzymes before such meals to support gut function and immediately kill off parasites in your stomach,” says Laubscher. “And when it comes to produce, an easy way to combat this is to soak your fruits and veggies in water in your kitchen sink with 1 cup of vinegar for five to 10 minutes, rinse, and store,” she adds.
Here’s a general outline which may be useful to help guide your cleanse:
Start the day with warm lemon water or apple cider vinegar mixed in water
Take anti-parasitic herbs and/or essential oils with or before food
Eat a nutrient-dense breakfast free from sugar, gluten, and dairy
Stay well hydrated throughout the morning
Optional: include dry brushing or gentle movement to support lymphatic flow
Eat a light, cooked meal with gut-supportive herbs
Avoid raw foods after 4pm
Sip calming herbal teas like chamomile, lavender and valerian
Apply essential oils (diluted) to the abdomen or soles of the feet

“This timing is important because, over a full moon, your body produces less melatonin and more serotonin, which encourages the parasites to reproduce,” explains Laubscher. Some may experience mild detox symptoms like headaches, bloating, skin rashes or irritability, which is also known as a Herxheimer reaction. “This usually happens if you detox too fast or don’t support your body’s detox pathways properly,” says Laubscher. “The majority of my clients feel some IBS symptoms for about three days, then they are off and racing, feeling better each week.”
To manage symptoms safely, she recommends staying hydrated, taking Epsom salt baths, getting plenty of rest and slowing down by reducing supplement doses if needed. “I’d always recommend following a gut cleanse protocol created by a health professional to ensure a thorough and successful cleanse so you don’t suffer and cause more harm than good.”
Signs the cleanse is working include improved digestion, increased energy, clearer skin and better mood. “Try to get to bed at least two hours before midnight to support your body’s detox processes.”
One last word of advice? Laubscher notes that restful sleep and patience are also key.

Supporting the lymphatic system is also a wise idea. “Such health hacks include infrared sauna protocols, cold water therapy, dry brushing, castor oil packs and lymphatic massage can also really help,” says Laubscher. “I also love essential oils like clove, oregano, tea tree, myrrh, peppermint, and lemongrass that you can rub into your belly clockwise to help your gut cleanse.” These simple daily practices can make a big difference.
