Ten minutes barefoot on a tray of salt is supposed to reset your nervous system. A psychologist explains what's actually happening.

Stand barefoot on a tray of salt before bed, and wait for your nervous system to reset. That's the pitch behind salt stomping, a viral health hack promising to lower cortisol, switch on your "rest and digest" mode, and help you bank a better night's sleep.
Like most wild wellbeing trends doing the rounds, nobody's actually tested whether any of that's true. People keep trying it anyway and reporting the same thing afterwards: they feel noticeably calmer. For something this low-effort, the claims attached to it don't hold back: lower cortisol, deeper sleep, reduced inflammation, and even magnesium supposedly absorbed straight through the soles of your feet.
However, the true health benefits may lie in what people are doing during those 10 minutes of salt stomping, from standing still to focusing on a physical sensation, rather than anything unique to salt’s properties. Here’s what experts make of the trend, and what it can and can’t do for you.
Salt stomping is exactly what it sounds like. You stand barefoot on a layer of dry, coarse sea salt or Epsom salts, typically in the evening as part of a wind-down routine.
This trend is different from an Epsom salt bath, which involves soaking in fully dissolved salt water, creating a completely different kind of exposure. This becomes particularly relevant once you get to claims about salt stomping and magnesium absorption.
There are no clinical trials showing that salt stomping lowers cortisol or switches the body into a parasympathetic state, which is inconvenient for a trend built entirely on those two claims. What people anecdotally report still counts, though. The calm seems real, so it may just be getting credited to the wrong thing.
Dr. Becky Spelman, HCPC-registered counselling psychologist and clinical director at The Private Therapy Clinic, points first to expectation. People step onto the salt already primed to unwind, and that expectation changes what they go on to notice in their own body. The mineral under their feet, as she puts it, is "mostly along for the ride."
An anxious mind can run on autopilot, jumping from one worry to the next without much say from you. "You stand still on an odd, grainy surface for 10 minutes, you slow right down, and you give your attention something plain and physical to rest on," says Dr. Spelman. "That mix of a pause and a focus is calming on its own."
Focusing on what's happening under your feet can interrupt that spiral and bring you back into the present moment. "A strong, present sensation gives the mind somewhere concrete to go, back into the body and into the room you are actually in," she adds. “That can break a worry loop long enough for the edge to come off."
Dr. Spelman draws a clear line between this kind of short-term calming effect and treating a diagnosed anxiety disorder, which requires appropriate professional care. Standing still, breathing slower, and putting your phone down for a few minutes also happen at the same time as the act of salt stomping, and could all contribute to the calm people report.
The sensory redirection Dr. Spelman describes has similarities with grounding, but that term is used for two very different practices. One is “earthing”, the claim that direct skin contact with the earth changes the body through some kind of electrical exchange. Dr. Spelman is blunt about the evidence there. "It's thin, mostly small pilot studies and not something worth building a routine around,” she says.
The other is grounding in the clinical sense, a set of sensory techniques used to pull attention firmly into the present moment, deliberately noticing textures, temperature, or the feeling of feet on the floor. This version is well established for taking the heat out of acute anxiety and sits inside recognised therapies including CBT and dialectical behaviour therapy. "Salt stomping is a loose, homemade cousin of that," Dr. Spelman says. "The technique is sound. The salt is the part with nothing behind it."
“Rest and digest” is shorthand for parasympathetic nervous system activity, which is associated with functions such as a slower heart rate and digestion. Some of what happens during salt stomping, particularly slower breathing, could encourage a shift in that direction.
Slowing your breathing can increase signals from the vagus nerve that help bring your heart rate down and the body into a calmer state. “If stepping onto the salt becomes the cue to stop, let your shoulders drop and breathe slowly for a few minutes, your body tends to follow,” says Dr. Spelman.
Cortisol isn't something that needs to be constantly pushed down. It runs on a daily rhythm, high in the morning to help you get moving, tailing off through the day to its lowest point at night. Rising and falling is what it's supposed to do.
"The popular idea that any relaxing activity 'lowers cortisol' is far too neat, and almost nobody claiming it has actually measured a thing," Dr. Spelman says. Feeling calmer after 10 minutes on a tray of salt can be useful in its own right, but it tells us very little about cortisol. Measuring a hormonal change would require considerably more than how relaxed someone feels afterwards.
This is one of the more specific claims attached to salt stomping, although evidence for absorbing meaningful amounts of magnesium through the skin remains limited.
One frequently cited study from the University of Birmingham involved 19 people soaking their whole bodies in dissolved Epsom salts at 50 to 55°C for around 12 minutes each day for seven days. Researchers reported increases in blood magnesium in most participants, alongside changes in urinary magnesium. The study had no control group and was never published in a peer-reviewed journal. A later review of the evidence described its quality as questionable.
A small peer-reviewed trial has since tested magnesium cream against a placebo. After two weeks, researchers found no statistically significant increase in serum magnesium across the magnesium group as a whole, with a significant result appearing only in a subgroup of non-athletes.
Even the limited research suggesting magnesium might cross the skin has involved dissolved magnesium or topical preparations with sustained skin contact. Standing briefly on dry crystals creates a very different exposure, leaving little evidence that salt stomping could deliver a meaningful dose of magnesium through the feet.
The evidence here lines up most clearly behind a consistent wind-down routine, a repeated, calming cue that signals to the brain that the day is closing. What damages sleep most clearly is stimulating scrolling once you're already in bed, rather than screens at any point in the evening generally. "If salt stomping is the thing that gets someone to set the phone down and take a few quiet, repeatable minutes before bed, that habit is likely to help their sleep, whatever is under their feet," says Dr. Spelman.
One night of better sleep tracked on a wearable after trying it once isn't evidence of anything beyond the fact that a calmer evening produced a calmer night, which was probably the point all along.
The salt does contribute one obvious thing: texture. Coarse crystals create a strong and unusual sensation under bare feet, giving your attention somewhere physical to land.
Salt isn't unique in being able to provide that sensory input. A textured massage ball, standing barefoot on a mat, a few minutes of slow stretching, a warm shower, or deliberately noticing what you can see, hear, and feel in the room could create a similar sensory anchor. The particular appeal of salt may be that it's unusual enough to make you stop and notice it.
For most healthy people, giving it a go is low-risk. It's free or close to it, and if it gets someone to put their phone down and breathe slower for ten minutes before bed, that's a solid habit to build, whatever's actually happening underfoot.
A few sensible cautions are worth knowing. Dr. Spelman flags broken skin or cuts as a reason to skip it, along with taking care not to slip on a scattered tray of salt. Anyone with diabetes, neuropathy, or poor circulation in their feet should check with a GP first or avoid it, since reduced sensation can make small grazes easy to miss. It also shouldn't stand in for real support if someone's anxiety or sleep is struggling well beyond what ten minutes on a salt tray can touch. "Plenty of simpler, free options do the same job," Dr. Spelman adds, "sitting with your feet flat on the floor and breathing slowly, a warm shower, a few minutes of stretching, or quietly naming what you can see, hear and feel around you. The salt is the bit you can take or leave."
