It might sound futuristic, but hydrogen water is making waves as the latest upgrade in hydration, recovery and cellular health…

From LA wellness studios to elite athlete training camps, hydrogen water is suddenly everywhere. It’s being hailed as the next evolution in hydration and a molecular-level upgrade that claims to boost energy, speed up recovery and support cellular health from the inside out. TikTokers are stirring dissolvable tablets into sleek glass bottles, wellness brands are launching high-tech hydrogen infusers and sports scientists are studying its potential for performance and inflammation. But what exactly is hydrogen water? Can something as seemingly simple as water with extra hydrogen really deliver on all that promise or is this yet another wellness trend floating on a fizzy cloud of hype?
Put simply it’s just water with extra molecular hydrogen (H₂) gas dissolved into it. That’s it. But what makes it interesting is how molecular hydrogen behaves inside the body.
“Pure water consists of two hydrogen molecules and one oxygen molecule… hydrogen water is exactly that, but infused with additional hydrogen molecules,” explains Sarah Jones St John, Energy Facilitator and Founder of Grey Wolfe. “Recent research points to various benefits of drinking hydrogen water, the biggest one being hydrogen’s ability to fight free radicals within the body and protect cells from oxidative stress, as well as increasing hydration levels.”
Because hydrogen is the tiniest molecule in the universe, it can slip through cell walls (and even cross the blood-brain barrier) reaching deep into your tissues. There, it’s believed to act as a targeted antioxidant, helping to reduce damage from free radicals. Researchers are also looking into its potential to support cell communication, reduce inflammation, and boost mitochondrial function (basically, your cells’ energy engines).
Without getting even more sciency, this means it may help your body recover faster, feel more energised, and age better, at least, according to early but promising science.
While the research is still evolving, the appeal is obvious. Hydrogen water taps into several dominant wellness themes like recovery, resilience, longevity and better performance. It’s non-toxic, stimulant-free, and fits easily into any daily routine with no prep and no time-consuming or expensive ritual.
Plus, it’s got that elusive ‘biohacker meets beauty editor’ energy that’s high-tech yet minimalist. It’s essentially hydration with a cool, functional edge. Whilst athletes are using it to ‘bounce back’ from training, beauty editors love the antioxidant appeal and others are sipping it between sauna sessions, breathwork and cold plunges. It’s one of those rare trends that feels cutting-edge and low-effort all at once.
Yes but we’re still very much in the early stages.
“There are various studies which show benefits,” says Sarah. “One of the most exciting discoveries was this recent study which involved patients receiving radiotherapy for liver cancer. The study found that the group who drank up to 2 litres of hydrogen water per day for a period of 8 weeks showed significantly decreased levels of hydroperoxide, which is a marker of oxidative stress and maintained greater antioxidant activity after radiation treatment than the control group,” she adds.
“This shows great potential for hydrogen water to help those with compromised immunity, which affects many people who suffer from chronic conditions, as well as those recovering from other diseases.”
Elsewhere, this placebo-controlled study in Medical Gas Research found that hydrogen-rich water reduced muscle fatigue in elite athletes. Another in Free Radical Research showed it improved oxidative stress levels in patients with metabolic syndrome. That said, the research is still small and results very much vary depending on dose, method of delivery and individual health factors. The evidence is promising, but we’re definitely not in miracle territory… yet.
“People who suffer the effects of heightened oxidative stress or a compromised immune system would benefit from hydrogen water the most,” says Sarah who also notes a performance angle. “Various studies have shown that continued consumption of hydrogen water contributed to lowered levels of blood lactate, which benefits athletes and people who exercise intensely, as it can greatly accelerate recovery time.”
Importantly, she also adds: “Hydrogen water has not shown any significant side effects, so its hydrating effects can be enjoyed by almost anyone.”
Despite the buzz on social media, there are still claims that don’t hold any weight for now. “Currently, there isn’t enough research about hydrogen water directly contributing to anti-ageing,” Sarah clarifies. “Although boosted hydration does have an impact on how our skin looks and feels, there is no direct correlation between anti-ageing, which mostly relies on collagen production and increased hydrogen consumption.” So while better hydration may help skin glow and bounce back, this certainly isn’t a substitute for your collagen supplements or retinol just yet.
Hydrogen water is deceptively simple but it can also be a bit of a minefield with different formats and often overpriced products. Here's how best to approach it:
Hydrogen tablets: these are great for travel or daily use as they just dissolve in your usual water.
Portable hydrogen generators: these are sleek-looking countertop or on-the-go devices with brands like Optimal Health leading the way here.
Hydrogen flasks and pitchers: these are perfect for at-home upgrades and replacing your hand-held water filter.
“It’s my understanding that all forms of hydrogen are equally beneficial,” Sarah says. “The preferred format will likely depend on your budget. However, the recommendation for any type of hydrogen water is that you drink it as quickly as possible, so that you can enjoy maximum benefit before the hydrogen begins to evaporate.”
One thing also worth noting is that hydrogen doesn't remain in water long-term, so pre-bottled hydrogen water is only effective if properly sealed. Fresh generation is typically much more reliable.
There’s no denying hydrogen water sits in a compelling space with it being science-backed but not overblown and innovative yet simple and it does more than just a passing fad.
“Right now, hydrogen water is definitely a niche recovery aid,” says Sarah. “But thanks to countless studies and new research supporting its health benefits, I think it has the power to continue proving itself as a long-term aid, rather than simply being a mainstream trend that’ll fade,” she adds. “Its ability to boost the immune system of cancer patients and people suffering from chronic diseases is extremely promising,” she adds. “I’m sure that with more time and research, we’ll uncover further benefits of drinking hydrogen water.”
So no, it won’t replace a healthy diet or make up for poor sleep, but if you’re someone who’s already dialled into longevity, biohacking or functional wellness, this might be a worthy addition to your hydration lineup.
