What is PCOS?
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a hormonal disorder that affects women. It is characterised by an imbalance in reproductive hormones, leading to a range of symptoms. While the exact cause is still unknown, factors such as genetics and insulin resistance may contribute to this condition.
My experience and symptoms with PCOS
Growing up, my health journey with PCOS unfolded through countless challenging symptoms that significantly impacted my well-being. Irregular menstrual cycles, due to the absence of regular ovulation, led to both physical discomfort and emotional distress. In addition to the burden of extreme pain and nausea during these cycles, I also experienced Hyperandrogenism. This manifests in the excessive production of male hormones and presents symptoms such as persistent acne and increased body hair growth. To tackle the acne issue, I found myself on a four-year course of Roaccutane, emphasising the profound impact PCOS had on my daily life. Moreover, ultrasounds revealed the presence of numerous cysts on my ovaries. These symptoms formed the background of my prolonged journey toward diagnosis and understanding.
Getting diagnosed:
The path to a conclusive diagnosis was marked by countless blood tests and ultrasounds, often overshadowed by dismissive medical advice suggesting that weight loss and contraceptive pills were the cure to my concerns. This cycle of advice continued for five years, during which I intermittently adhered to the prescribed solutions. However, after years of trying every pill and every FAD diet, I felt a persistent sense of unease and a conviction that there must be a more comprehensive approach to address the root cause of my PCOS. It was this realisation that provoked a transformative shift in my outlook, leading me to explore a holistic approach. By targeting the underlying issues, I not only managed to alleviate the troubling symptoms but also witnessed a significant reduction in ovarian cysts. This journey has not only empowered me to take charge of my health but has also highlighted the importance of addressing PCOS at its core for a more sustainable and fulfilling well-being.
Managing PCOS:
Managing PCOS has been a challenging journey, but through dedicated lifestyle modifications, I've found a natural and effective way to navigate this condition. Here are some key practices that have significantly contributed to my well-being:
1. Balanced Diet for Blood Sugar Control:
Starting the day with a balanced breakfast rich in protein has been a game-changer for me. Consuming a nourishing meal within 30 minutes to 1 hour of waking has helped stabilise my blood sugar levels and keeps me full throughout the day. Moreover, avoiding caffeine before breakfast is crucial, as it can spike cortisol levels, which are often imbalanced with PCOS.
My meals often include a combination of greens, healthy fats, protein, and an unrefined, high-fibre carbohydrate. It's a delicious and nutritious way to support my overall health.
In addition, recognising the healing power of food, I ensure to incorporate a 'PCOS-friendly' dessert into my weekly meal prep to make sure I also satisfy my sweet tooth.
2. Mindful Exercise Routine:
Regular exercise plays a crucial role in managing PCOS. Opting for low-impact activities, such as Pilates, walking, and resistance training, helps keep cortisol levels in check. This mindful approach to exercise has improved my insulin resistance and contributed to my overall well-being without placing excessive stress on my body.
3. Stress Management Practices:
I found that coping with stress was essential for managing PCOS. I've found comfort in various stress management techniques, including journaling, speaking with a therapist, engaging in artistic activities like drawing or pottery painting, and going for walks. The key is to find what works best for you, as stress management strategies can vary from person to person.
4. Supplement Support:
Incorporating essential supplements into my day-to-day life has played an important role in managing PCOS symptoms. Vitamin D, inositol, folate, maca, and chromium are staples in my routine, providing the necessary support for my overall health.
By embracing these holistic practices, I've not only managed the challenges of PCOS but also cultivated a lifestyle that promotes lasting health and wellness. Remember, everyone's journey is unique, so it's essential to tailor these strategies to fit your individual needs and preferences. It is also important to note that while most days look like this for me, I make sure to live by the 80/20 rule.
Living with PCOS can be challenging, but by understanding the condition, seeking professional guidance, and making positive lifestyle changes, it's possible to navigate this journey towards wellness.
Remember, you're never alone!
