How I manage my ADHD, naturally

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is a common learning disability that is widely misunderstood. Prescription medication is often used to manage it but said medication is not without side effects. As such, natural alternatives, known as nootropics, are gaining traction in online forums.

Under-graduate Owen Tang explores the way in which ADHD is managed and evaluates the efficacy of prescription drugs alongside the viability of popular nootropics as alternatives.

What is ADHD?

A lack of neurotransmitters causes ADHD. It often manifests as learning and behavioural disorders, with common symptoms including inattention and impulsivity, with some individuals also being at higher risk of mood disorders like anxiety and depression.

Healthcare providers have long used methylphenidate-based medication to manage the disorder. While such medication is highly effective and widely considered safe, it is not without adverse effects. Users often report experiencing insomnia, nausea, and tachycardia while on the medication.

As an undergraduate with ADHD, I often struggle to manage both the disorder and the side effects of the medication. I frequently experience an inability to focus and stay calm without medication, and insomnia, tachycardia, and anorexia while on it. To avoid this, I've explored nootropics as a natural alternative. Since opting for nootropics as substitutes for medication, I found those explored below, available under the pillar “MIND”, extremely effective for managing the disability without the side effects of medication.

Stress and anxiety

L-Theanine

L-Theanine is an amino acid found mainly in green and black teas and is known for its potential to reduce stress and boost well-being. Preliminary studies  suggest that this natural compound lowers stress levels and promotes relaxation without sedation, elevating mood and enhancing sleep quality. Additionally, it may boost alpha brain waves, supporting clear thinking. These benefits are particularly noteworthy for individuals with ADHD, who often experience anxiety-related conditions and an inability to focus.

My choice for sleep with ADHD

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is an adaptogen that has garnered attention for its potential to mildly sedate and relieve stress. Studies show that its adaptogenic properties help the body resist physical and mental stress, promoting a state of calm. Both research and anecdotal accounts suggest its efficacy in managing insomnia. ADHD often leads to poor sleep, and using ashwagandha may help balance cortisol levels and support adrenal health, leading to deeper relaxation and better sleep.

Mental and cognitive performance with ADHD

For Mental Performance: Creatine

Creatine, known for enhancing athletic performance, has also drawn attention for its potential cognitive benefits. A recent study has shown that creatine supplements significantly boost mental performance, particularly in improving working memory, which is often challenging for those with ADHD. Additionally, creatine has shown promising neuroprotective properties, potentially safeguarding brain health and mitigating cognitive decline. Given these benefits, creatine supplements seem effective for managing ADHD symptoms and maintaining overall brain health.

For Cognitive Function: Lion's Mane

Lion's Mane has garnered considerable attention for its cognitive-enhancing benefits. Research shows that it can improve cognitive function, particularly in areas such as memory and concentration, by stimulating the production of nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein essential for the growth and maintenance of neurons. Lion's Mane is a promising supplement for those with ADHD, as enhanced cognitive function and improved focus are particularly valuable. Like creatine, Lion's Mane exhibits neuroprotective properties, potentially reducing the risk of cognitive decline and supporting overall brain health. By boosting cognitive performance and promoting mental clarity, Lion's Mane offers a natural and effective supplement for managing ADHD symptoms.

Exploring natural alternatives to ADHD medication can be worthwhile for those who experience adverse side effects from methylphenidate. While prescription drugs are effective, the potential of nootropics available under MIND, like L-Theanine, Ashwagandha, Creatine, and Lion's Mane, offer a promising alternative for managing symptoms of ADHD. These nootropics provide a holistic approach to managing the disability, offering effective symptom relief with fewer side effects compared to traditional medication.

However, it's important to remember that everyone responds differently to medication and supplements. To ensure that nootropics work as intended, it is best to consult your physician and test for deficiencies before replacing prescription medication with supplements.
