We speak to Davies Roberts, Founder and CEO of Flare Audio - the leading company in keeping our ears safe!
We have chosen to stock the Sleeep range from Flare Audio due to the importance of a quiet nights sleep. Noise can cause a disrupted nights sleep as it prevents our body from entering into a deep sleep, as well as increasing unwanted hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. That is why we believe that Flare Audio's Sleeep Ear Plugs are so important to enable you to maximise the health benefits of sleep.
What was the inspiration behind Flare Audio?
I started Flare Audio due to a passion in sound and a frustration that traditional approaches were failing to produce high quality audio. As we developed our technology we became aware that there were issues with how our ears heard sound which has led us to develop a variety of ground breaking in-ear technologies.
Could you describe your journey to get where you are today?
It’s been a wild ride! We’ve always been very dynamic and so are able to shift gear and diversify when we need to. It’s not always been easy – we started Flare from a garage as a team of three 10 years ago. It was tough, but we are a passionate team and we had clear goals and visions. Fast forward to 2020 and we are a team of 22 in a great warehouse. Our designs and products mean such a lot to us and we spend a lot of time and effort getting them right. By focusing everything on our products function, rather than form means that our products tend to outperform traditional approaches and have a unique look.
I’ve heard you describe noise as your “enemy”. Could you describe a bit about what this means, and why it’s so important to protect our ears?
I always design products using a particle approach, in a very precise way. I work out how sound particles will behave in different scenarios and use that information to inform my designs. Sound in a nutshell is simply a disturbance of particles, in order for sound to stay high quality those disturbances should not be distorted. Sound can be distorted by bouncing off different shapes or by listening at loud volumes through a low quality audio source. Noise is a distortion of the original sound; therefore I regard it as my enemy and something I am focussed on eliminating in order to improve our connection with music and to improve our audio wellbeing. I’ve recently realised that distortion in sound also increases stress as our brains have to work harder in order to process distorted sound. Much like looking at a blurred image.
We’ve only got one set of ears and so it is incredibly important to protect them. I often think that ears are one of the points of entry to our soul and as such we should take great care of them and treat them with the respect they deserve.
How do you want people to feel when they try your products for the first time, in 5 words or less?
Relaxed, engaged, and intrigued (depending on the product…!).
Tell us about the future of Flare Audio. What’s the vision and is there a specific goal that you’re hoping to achieve?
My vision is for Flare to become the brand that everyone associates with high quality innovative sound and audio products.
Finally, tell us a bit about yourself and your own health journey..
What does health mean to you?
Good health improves everything. Your outlook to life, your feelgood factor, your ability to cope with and better manage stress and anxiety. You can’t rid yourself from potential stressful situations but you can help yourself by reducing your loading which in turn increases your ability to deal with things.
Have you always been interested in health?
Not really no! I used to take my health for granted, working long hours into late at night, making poor food choices with no nutritional benefit, smoking and drinking… Loading my body with toxins that ended up effecting my mental health as well as my physical health.
Changing what I eat changed my life, I lost 6 stone a few years ago and the journey made me much more aware of how eating real food not only improves our physical health but also has a huge impact on our mental wellbeing.
