Whether or not you're a rawdogging sceptic, in this article, we evaluate the science and logic behind the madness. We touch upon its potential mental and physical health benefits, whilst introducing you to some essentials from Healf to help you on your journey.
The source of the trend can be traced back to a TikToker known as Westy. In May 2024, he dropped a viral video with the caption: "POV: successfully completed another 7hr flight only watching the maps." His collection of video accounts created an unprecedented global ‘rawdogging’ following, with a seismic buzz around this minimalist approach to travel. Others quickly followed suit. For instance, a British DJ, Wudini, later boasted on TikTok that he had endured his flight for seven hours with no entertainment to over 13 million viewers.
‘Rawdogging’ might seem like an unusual expression. But the definition of it is quite simple; it's the act of boarding a flight with minimal preparation or entertainment. Phones, tablets, laptops, video content, games and music are not permitted. Simply put, rawdogging is being truly open to the unknown, allowing your resourcefulness and spur-of-the-moment decisions to be your guide instead of rigid itineraries or a constant reliance on digital crutches. Some rawdoggers, like Westy, even go without food and water, believing it creates a more personal and spiritual connection with travelling.
It is no surprise that this trend appeals to a certain crowd: adventurous spirits, minimalists, and those looking to break free from the habitual reliance on digital devices during flights. Rawdogging, in its simplicity, has swept across the world of social media influencers, as well as more anonymous travellers of all ages. In a global environment of bombardment with relentless information and connectivity, it invites a refreshing take on addressing and reassessing our tech-heavy lifestyles.
* If you are aware of any health issues that could be affected by going without food and water on a flight, please take precautionary measures to protect your health whilst travelling.

Rawdogging a flight can be likened to a meditative practice, inviting the traveller to be wholly present in the moment, enjoying the experience and the company, without the many distractions of life's trappings and conveniences.
Men Talking Mindfulness , a show discussing the impact of mindfulness on people from all walks of life, is hosted by Will Schneider. Will expresses his excitement for the rawdogging trend, saying: “Think about it like a candle wick meditation, where you watch the flame burn and burn and that’s all you do” and adding, “Social media isn’t going away, but this is one instance where sharing what you’re doing could get someone else to try something new and good as well”.
Before you leave, let’s make sure you’re all set — albeit, as prepared as you can be as a minimal traveller!
If going all-out like Westy, doesn’t quite appeal to you and you would still like a bit of comfort on your journey, consider packing:
A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.
A lightweight scarf or pillow for added comfort and versatility.
Noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs to block out distractions.
Be aware that embarking on a journey rawdogging-style will require a notable shift in your mindset. This journey is going to be different to anything you may have experienced before. You will need to embrace unpredictability and focus on each moment, preserving a sense of adventure and a readiness to adapt to whatever comes your way.
