Big life shifts and changes have the capacity to fundamentally alter the way our minds work. Here’s what the science says.

Breakups, weddings, new babies, bereavements. These aren’t just events on your social calendar, but life milestones that actively change us on a biological level. As a growing body of research is discovering, these events don’t just alter how we interact with the world, but quite literally how our brains work.
When we experience big changes, good or bad, our brain pathways are rewired through mechanisms that are far more profound than most people realise. Often, the impact can last for the rest of our lives.
Here, we‘re taking you inside your own brain, and peering into the vital processes that can take place during four major life events. Because, by understanding what is really going on during some of the most taxing and joyful experiences in life, we can be better prepared to face them with comprehension and compassion. Not just for others, but for ourselves, too.
Our brains are not fixed, but rather constantly changing, growing, and adapting to the world around us. Anytime you learn or do something new, have new experiences, or feel emotions, it can create changes in the brain where new pathways might be formed and other pathways weakened. There may even be structural changes taking place.
“As a result of these ‘rewirings,’ you might learn to become less emotionally reactive to situations, develop a new fear after a terrifying experience, or notice that a new activity you’re learning becomes easier and see yourself progressing to harder levels over time,” explains Erika Kawamura, PsyD, DipACLM, a licensed psychologist board-certified in lifestyle medicine and director of strategic initiatives at Equilibria Psychological and Consultation.
‘Rewiring’ isn’t just a buzzword, it’s a process where our brains actually change their structure. “When something happens repeatedly, the connections between brain cells strengthen through a process called ‘synaptic plasticity’,” explains Dr. Bijal Chheda, consultant chartered psychologist and founder of Nos Curare. “The brain isn't just building new pathways, it's also optimising, quietly removing old ones it no longer needs.”
This is why major life events, such as heartbreak, becoming a parent, and falling in love, leave such a lasting mark. It isn’t an exaggeration to say people come out the other side of a big life event as a genuinely different version of themselves, because physically, they are.
If you’ve been lucky enough to experience it, you’ll know that falling in love lights up the brain's reward system. Dopamine and oxytocin flood in, creating that unmistakable high of connection. Over time, the brain can start to treat this new partner as essential to its own sense of reward. When a relationship ends, dopamine levels drop sharply, and the brain experiences this as a significant loss.
Ever felt so heartbroken after a breakup that you felt in physical pain? You aren’t being dramatic. “It’s well-known that your brain processes loss and social rejection, such as a breakup, in a similar way as it does with physical harm and pain,” explains Kawamura.
The same areas of the brain are activated, similar brain pathways are involved, and similar changes occur with the levels in certain neurotransmitters such as dopamine and oxytocin – as a 2025 study in the International Journal of Scientific Research and Technology found.
A wave of new research explores the phenomenon of ‘dad brain.’ A 2024 study published in Nature found that various structural changes can start from preconception through two years postpartum. All of the changes benefit the father-baby relationship, with a drive toward bonding, empathy, and greater alertness to environmental threats.
More recently, a study published in May 2026 examined fathers’ brains immediately after childbirth through the first 24 weeks, and found that their brains change in order to facilitate paternal attachment and caregiving behaviours.
“It's genuinely fascinating,” says Dr. Chheda, adding that in the first six to nine weeks, the hormone vasopressin, released during bonding, boosts receptor activity in the prefrontal cortex and strengthens the very connections responsible for empathy.
“The more hands-on time spent with their child, the more pronounced these structural changes become, suggesting that active engagement can directly drive the rewiring process,” Dr. Chheda explains. “It isn’t a temporary switch, it’s a lasting shift in how the brain processes emotion.”
Vasopressin also plays a role in romantic bonding. “It acts on the regions in the brain tied to reward and motivation, effectively wiring a long-term partner into the brain's memory,” says Dr. Chheda. In truth, this is the biological basis for commitment, rather than that ‘gut feeling’ you might experience.
But, as relationships develop over years, the neurochemical landscape shifts. “Oxytocin and vasopressin become dominant, creating a different kind of bond based on trust and familiarity rather than novelty,” Dr. Chheda adds. Over years together, our brains become increasingly attuned to a partner's emotional state and needs. “As relationships deepen, supporting a loved one's wellbeing becomes more closely linked to the brain's reward system, making acts of care feel naturally motivating.”
For good or ill, our brains are constantly reacting to, well, life. Whatever’s happening, Kawamura says the adjustment phase can feel “stressful, and may be emotionally painful” – for you and your brain.
