Four everyday seeds have become one of the biggest trends in hormone health. We looked at what's backed by evidence, and what's still speculation.

Flax and pumpkin until ovulation. Sesame and sunflower until your next period. That's the premise behind seed cycling, a social media trend that’s transformed four everyday seeds into one of the biggest talking points in hormone health.
Behind the hype sit two very different claims. One is that changing seeds at different points in your cycle can influence hormone levels. The other is that eating more seeds, regardless of timing, improves your overall nutrition. Separating those two ideas is where things become far more interesting, according to a women's health nutritional therapist and a consultant gynaecologist, who have both been asked about seed cycling enough times to have a considered view.
Seed cycling is “involves eating specific seeds during the two halves of the menstrual cycle, flax and pumpkin in the follicular phase, then sesame and sunflower in the luteal phase, with the aim of supporting oestrogen first, then progesterone," explains Megan Hallett, mBANT, rCNHC, a women's health nutritional therapist.
In practical terms, that means:
If you don't know when you ovulate, most people following seed cycling switch at the midpoint of their average cycle, although there's no evidence this timing changes the outcome.
The thinking centres on the nutrients within those seeds. Flax and sesame contain lignans, plant compounds that can bind weakly to oestrogen receptors, while pumpkin and sunflower seeds provide nutrients including zinc, magnesium, vitamin E, and healthy fats that are involved in many aspects of reproductive health.
Timing and price explain most of it. The trend surfaced on TikTok and Instagram at the same moment hormone health became a mainstream search category, arriving alongside a bigger appetite for natural and functional approaches to periods, PCOS (or now PMOS), and PMS.
Hallett puts the appeal down to accessibility above anything else. "Seed cycling is popular largely because it's cheap, simple, and doesn't require expensive supplements or tools. That accessibility is definitely part of the appeal," she says. It doesn’t require an app, or a practitioner, or a £50 supplement stack, just a tablespoon of different types of seeds, twice a month.
Consultant gynecologist Dr, Lamia Zafrani, MBChB, MRes, MRCOG, sees lots of patients regularly asking whether there are dietary or lifestyle changes they can incorporate alongside their treatment. “That curiosity is something I always welcome," she says. Her role, she adds, is making sure those patients keep realistic expectations about what any dietary change can and can't do.
Before asking whether seed cycling works, it's worth being clear about what it actually claims to achieve. If the promise is that changing seeds throughout the month will directly shift oestrogen and progesterone levels, the evidence doesn't currently support it. "In theory, phytoestrogens should gently nudge our hormones, but studies show lignans had no significant influence on oestrogen concentrations during either phase of the cycle," says Hallett.
That doesn't mean the wider picture is entirely negative. Hallett points to a 2025 systematic review of ten studies that linked seed cycling with improved menstrual regularity, reduced PMS severity, and favourable changes in some sex hormone markers. She is quick to add, however, that the studies were small, the evidence was only moderate quality, and much larger trials are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.
Dr. Zafrani takes a similarly measured view. "Seeds contain lignans and fatty acids that may interact with oestrogen metabolism, but plausible mechanisms don't automatically translate into clinically meaningful effects in the body. The biology isn't implausible, but the evidence base simply isn't there yet," she says. That, she adds, isn't the same as saying seed cycling has been disproven. It means the research hasn't yet been robust enough to show whether it produces meaningful clinical benefits.
For now, seed cycling sits somewhere between a biologically plausible idea and an evidence-based treatment.
Hallett suspects the nutrients within the seeds deserve more credit than the timing itself. "The individual nutrients in these seeds, lignans, omega-3s, zinc and vitamin E, have plausible links to hormone metabolism, and that recent PCOS study reported changes in LH and FSH," she says. LH (luteinising hormone) and FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) help regulate ovulation and the menstrual cycle, making them two of the main hormones researchers measure when assessing reproductive health.
Fibre, healthy fats, zinc, magnesium, and vitamin E all have well-established functions in the body. What's still largely anecdotal is whether eating particular seeds at particular points in the menstrual cycle offers any extra benefit beyond eating them regularly as part of a balanced diet.
Asked whether the reported improvements could simply reflect a higher intake of fibre, healthy fats, and essential nutrients, Hallett doesn't hesitate. "Very likely, yes. Alongside fibre and healthy fats, you're also adding minerals like zinc and magnesium, vitamin E, and phytoestrogens, mainly from flax and sesame," she says.
Stripped of the cycling framework, each seed brings something worthwhile to your diet, regardless of where you are in your menstrual cycle.
Rich in fibre, omega-3 ALA, and lignans, flaxseed is arguably the nutritional standout of the four. Its fibre supports digestive health, while ALA, the plant form of omega-3, contributes to heart health. Although flax contains more lignans than any of the other seeds, research hasn't shown that this reliably translates into measurable changes in oestrogen levels.
Pumpkin seeds are one of the richest natural sources of magnesium, while also providing zinc and healthy fats. Magnesium contributes to normal muscle and nervous system function and has been linked to better sleep quality, while zinc is essential for immune function, skin health, and normal fertility.
Sesame seeds combine healthy fats with calcium and lignans. Calcium supports healthy bones and normal muscle function, making sesame a useful addition to diets that fall short on dairy or other calcium-rich foods. Like flaxseed, its lignans have attracted interest for hormone health, but that effect hasn't been convincingly demonstrated in human studies.
Sunflower seeds are particularly rich in vitamin E, alongside selenium and unsaturated fats. Vitamin E helps protect cells from oxidative stress, while selenium is needed for normal thyroid function and immune health. Those benefits are well established, regardless of when during the month you eat them.
Not many, and none serious for most people. A sudden jump in seed intake can bring on bloating or looser digestion simply because fibre intake has gone up quickly, an adjustment that usually settles within a week or two. Seeds also carry calories, mostly from healthy fats, which add up across a month if they're stacked on top of an already full diet rather than swapped in for something else.
Hallett flags one genuine safety note. "Seeds are generally very safe, though anyone with a seed allergy obviously needs to avoid the relevant ones," she says.
Dr. Zafrani's caution sits elsewhere, in what seed cycling might end up replacing rather than in the seeds themselves. "If there is an underlying clinical condition driving your symptoms, whether that's RED-S, PMOS, endometriosis, thyroid dysfunction, or anything else, seed cycling is very unlikely to address the root cause," she says.
She's specific about which symptoms should prompt a GP visit rather than a change to breakfast. "Any post-menopausal bleeding should be investigated promptly, that is never something to manage with lifestyle changes alone," she says. Excruciating period pain, cycles that have become significantly irregular or stopped altogether, and symptoms that keep worsening rather than improving all warrant proper assessment first.
"Anyone whose diet is currently low in fibre, healthy fats, zinc," Hallett says, alongside women managing PMS or PCOS symptoms as one part of a wider approach rather than a standalone fix, and anyone looking for an affordable way to diversify their intake of plant-based nutrients.
Dr. Zafrani wouldn't discourage it either, provided expectations stay grounded. "There is no clinical evidence to show it can [help with PMS or irregular periods], but if someone wants to incorporate it as part of a generally nutritious diet and it causes no harm, I wouldn't discourage it," she says. Her only condition is that it never replaces getting persistent symptoms looked at.
There's little downside to eating more flax, pumpkin, sesame, and sunflower seeds, and a reasonable nutritional case for doing so regardless of which week you're eating them in.
Hallett's advice is to build the fundamentals first. "Get the foundations right first, sleep, blood sugar balance, protein, and fibre intake, stress management, and use seeds as the icing on the cake, not the cake itself," she says. Her practical advice is to:
Dr. Zafrani doesn't see it as a choice between one approach or the other. "It's not an either/or question, patients can incorporate seed cycling alongside evidence-based treatment if they wish, and I wouldn't tell anyone to stop. But I would never replace a clinically indicated treatment with it, and it's important women understand the difference," she says.
Her closing point is the one worth carrying into whichever hormone trend comes after this one. "'Natural' doesn't automatically mean effective, and the absence of harm isn't the same as evidence of benefit," she says. Eat the seeds because they're a truly useful source of fibre, healthy fats, and minerals. Don't expect them to do a treatment's job.
There's no clinical evidence that it does, though the seeds themselves supply nutrients involved in hormone production and metabolism. The ‘balancing’ effect specifically hasn't been demonstrated in rigorous human trials.
For measurably shifting oestrogen and progesterone, the evidence doesn't back it up. For improving overall nutrition, and possibly easing PMS symptoms through better nutrition generally, early research is more encouraging, though still limited to small studies.
Hallett recommends tracking how you feel across two to three full cycles before drawing conclusions, rather than expecting a change within one month.
Flax and pumpkin during the follicular phase, from the first day of your period to ovulation. Sesame and sunflower during the luteal phase, from ovulation to your next period. Roughly a tablespoon of each, daily.
No clinical evidence confirms this. If your periods are irregular, that's worth raising with a doctor directly rather than managing through diet alone, particularly if the change is new or persistent.
There's no dedicated evidence for menopause specifically. Sunflower and pumpkin seeds do contribute nutrients (vitamin E, selenium, magnesium) relevant to this life stage, independent of any cycling protocol.
There's no safety concern with eating the seeds themselves. Since the pill already regulates hormone levels externally, any theoretical hormone-shifting effect from seeds is unlikely to register either way.
A 2025 systematic review of ten studies reported improvements in menstrual regularity and PMS symptoms, but the studies were generally small and moderate quality. Larger, well-designed trials are still needed before researchers can conclude that seed cycling itself is responsible.
