Sinetrol is not necessarily new to the world of wellbeing, but it's taken on new relevance in the age of GLP-1s.

Weight management has become one of the biggest, loudest conversations in the wide world of wellbeing at the moment, thanks to the rise of GLP-1 medications that promote rapid weight loss. But if you aren't going down that route, is there anything a bit more "natural" with real evidence behind it to suggest it can help with weight management? One branded extract made of citrus polyphenols — the compounds in grapefruit, sweet orange and blood orange – has been attracting lots of attention in that arena.
Sinetrol has been on ingredient labels for over a decade, and it is turning up in UK formulas built around metabolic support rather than appetite suppression, including BioCare's Weight Support & Metabolic Complex. It has a decent stack of human research behind it, which already separates it from most things supplements sold for weight management. It also has clear limits. And the most interesting finding about Sinetrol has very little to do with how it changes the number on the scale. Here is everything to know about this extract and what it can do for you.
Sinetrol is a standardised extract made from grapefruit, sweet orange and guarana seed. It's rich in more than 40 polyphenols — natural plant compounds — including naringin, hesperidin and eriocitrin. The idea behind the blend is that it encourages fat cells to release the fat they've stored, a process known as lipolysis, so the body can then burn it for energy. Early lab research suggests it works by blocking an enzyme called cAMP-phosphodiesterase, which acts as a sort of "off switch" on fat release — when it's blocked, the signal to release fat stays switched on for longer.
A 12-week randomised, double-blind trial in 95 overweight adults in Phytotherapy Research found that the group supplementing with Sinetrol lost 2.62kg on average against 1.6kg on placebo, with a 9.7% reduction in abdominal fat and roughly 5cm off both waist and hip. Circulating free fatty acids rose sharply, which lines up with the lipolysis theory.
To be clear, mobilising fatty acids is not the same as burning them — that still depends on what you do with your day.
A later 12-week trial in 100 Korean adults using DEXA scanning found significant reductions in body weight, BMI, and fat mass against placebo, though body-fat percentage did not separate from placebo. A small open-label dose-response study published in 2024 reported improvements in HbA1c, leptin, and cholesterol alongside shifts in butyrate-producing gut bacteria.
The newest trial, a 16-week randomised, double-blind study in 77 overweight and obese adults, was built around body-fat percentage rather than weight. Participants ate a normal diet and kept their usual activity levels, which makes the results harder to explain away. Total body fat fell against placebo, with most of the loss coming from the trunk, not lean tissue.
It's important to keep your muscle loss to a minimum while losing weight as it will help you feel, move and age better. The things that protect muscle are the unglamorous ones: enough protein, resistance training, decent sleep.
If you're going to take Sinetrol, you should make sure to take it with food, not on an empty stomach. And since it carries around 22mg caffeine from the guarana, it is worth a second thought if you are caffeine-sensitive or sleeping badly. It is not suitable for pregnant people, those breastfeeding, or if you're under 18, and anyone on glucose-lowering or anticoagulant medication should check with their GP or pharmacist first.
Most weight-management products lean on one hero compound. BioCare's Weight Support & Metabolic Complex pairs Sinetrol with three ingredients, each aimed at a different part of the weight-management equation: MaxiTherm, which is a microencapsulated cayenne extract, green tea, and chromium. Chromium even carries a formally authorised health claim for supporting normal blood sugar levels and helping the body process carbohydrates, fats, and protein.
Put together, these four ingredients work on four different parts of the same process. Sinetrol supports the body in releasing stored fat, cayenne supports with thermogenesis, green tea with polyphenol support, and chromium helps determine how the body handles glucose and processes what you eat.
The brand emphasises that the formula is nutritional support that should sit alongside a weight-management programme, not as a replacement for one. So, just remember to keep supporting all the systems that keep your body feeling strong and well.
